There are tons of things to do in and around the area of duPlooy's Jungle Lodge. You can choose to go canoeing on either the Macal, Mopan or Belize rivers, visit some of the best Mayan Ruins anywhere, see spectacular caves, go birding or horseback riding across the Belizean countryside, try some of the other local attractions, or just stay right here for the rainforest trails, swimming or the Belize Botanic Gardens

duPlooy's Birding Package

The Cayo District of Belize is well known for its abundant bird life. There have been over 300 species recorded within a 5-miles radius of duPlooy’s Jungle Lodge and Belize Botanic Gardens. With easy access to river, field, pond, forest and mountain habitat, you will be sure to add to your life list. You are welcome to bring your own guide, but it is not necessary. Three of the top bird guides in Belize are on duPlooy’s staff and all of them have excellent references.

Day One

Pick up at Belize International Airport; drive for about an hour to Crooked Tree Lagoon (We stop for birds). On your own after arrival followed by Dinner at Crooked Tree and evening Birding.

Day Two

Begin with early morning boat trip on the Lagoon to spot an abundance of water birds, including the possibility of Jabiru, Agami Heron, Sungrebe and many more sought-after species. Back to the lodge for brunch and then bird your way to duPlooy’s, arriving around 5pm.

Day Three

This day begins with coffee on duPlooy’s deck where you will most likely see Blue-crowned Motmot, several tanager species, Collared Aracari, Masked Tityra, Rose-throated Becard, and many, many more.

After breakfast, take a walk around duPlooy’s and Belize Botanic Gardens where there are several miles of trails. Look for the Tody Motmot, Royal Flycatcher and many more. Back to the lodge for lunch and free afternoon to bird around the property (with guide) or take a guided canoe trip into San Ignacio Town, birding along the Macal River.

* There will be night walks available any nights you wish. There are a couple of species of owls and the Northern Potoo out there as well as small mammals, insects and frogs.

Day Four

Head out early for Laguna Aguacate, located behind the Spanish Lookout Mennonite Community. This is a small oasis in the middle of farm land which is home to several wood creepers as well as many other species. See several species of kites on the way out.

Eat lunch at a local restaurant and enjoy an ice cream at the dairy before heading back to duPlooy's.

Day Five

Get up early again and spend a long day birding your way to the Caracol Maya Site. Along with a visit to the Ruins, Caracol is a superb rainforest site where you will look for birds such as Keel-billed Motmot, Lovely Cotinga and much more. Arrive back at the lodge in time for dinner.

Day Six

A short (less than 5 minutes) canoe ride across the Macal River to bird along the road and farms. After lunch visit the Xunantunich Maya Site for ruins and birding.

Day Seven

Spend the day working your way to the Mountain Pine Ridge where the bird of the day is the Orange Breasted Falcon. King Vultures are a probable sighting and Rufous-capped warblers have been sighted.

Day Eight

The El Pilar area which is a hilly area featuring an unexcavated ruin is full of birds. Here we will look for the Red-capped Manikin and Collared Trogon along with our other sightings. Eat lunch in San Ignacio Town, bird your way back to duPlooy’s or take this opportunity to visit one of our local caves for the afternoon.

Day Nine

Either Transfer back to Belize City for the trip home or continue on with us to the Blue Hole to look for White-whiskered puff bird and Slatey-tailed trogon. The end of the day will find us at the Cockscomb Basin where there are lots of hummingbirds and many other species, including Tinamou. Spend the night in the Cockscomb as we will arrive in late evening and walk the trails the next day

Day Ten

Spend as long as you like birding and hiking in the Cockscomb Reserve and then head to Hopkins Village where we will take a boat trip along the shore to see what we can see in the way of shore birds. Spend the night in Hopkins Village.

Day Eleven

Transfer by road back to Belize City for the trip home.
